• Straying sailors Foreigners had to come and go from Britain during the war, but they were treated with great suspicion. No foreigner was allowed on the streets after 10:30 p.m. Foreign sailors risked their lives by sailing through waters full of German submarines. They brought food and supplies to Britain … then were arrested if they stayed out too late. Two Greek sailors went for a drink then tried to find their way back to their ship. They became lost. ‘We’re all right. Here is a police station,’ one said. They walked in. ‘Excuse me. Can you tell us the way back to the docks?’ the sailor asked politely. The policeman glared at them. ‘It’s 10:45 and you are not on your ship. I am arresting you!’ They were fined £10 each.
